Mock up of front cover and contents page

Student magazine analysis two

On the front cover of this magazine there is a medium long shot of a man. The masthead is in the same place as most mastheads on the front cover, although it is covered by the mans head, this shows that the title is well known and doesn’t need to be prominently displayed. There is lots of important information on the front such as the month the episode came out, the issue number and a puff displaying a prize to be won. There are many cover lines on the front, they all have the same theme as they all have the subject and a brief description on what is written. There is no apparent colour theme but all the colours used work well.

This contents page has a prominent title to show what it is and a description of who the person is on the front. On this contents page there is more text than images, with each image there is a description and page number of where you could find this image.  On the bottom half of this contents page there are subjects written in red with page numbers and descriptions underneath. The red used on the front cover works its way in on the contents page. The page number and website address is displayed on the bottom right hand corner of the page. The reader of this magazine can easily find what they are looking for easily as the layout is very simple and easy to use.

Analysis of a student magazine

This student magazine has the masthead in the top right hand corner of the front cover. The masthead is quite prominent as it matches with the colours on the rest of the cover. The image on the front cover is a medium close up shot of a girl, the bright colours in this picture grab the attention of the reader. The cover lines are all in the same font, colour and size. They are all in the bottom right of the magazine leaving most of the front cover free to see the picture. The colour scheme of the front cover stays the same and mixes in with the image colours. This connotes a sense of meaning to the reader, the readers attention is drawn strongly to this front cover as it is simple but attractive.

The contents page is a two-cover spread, the large image on the two pages works in with the colour scheme on the front page. The headlines are all on the left hand side of the page with a few cover lines on the top right, this is very smart and works well with the picture on the pages. There is an editor’s letter in the middle of the two pages, this is a good idea as she tells the reader what is in this issue and what it is about.

Research and planning

I have chose to analyse Glamour magazine, a popular high street favourite! I am analysing this magazine to compare my Music magazine to and try to meet the high standards that need to be met.

The masthead of this magazine is always hidden behind an image or a price tag, as people know this title so well already.

Each magazine has a colour scheme, that continues through the magazine. The pink connotes a sense of femininity, which appeals to the target audience of women teenagers and adults.

This magazine is sold monthly, with the front page set out the same each time.

Each magazine has a popular celebrity icon on the front with a spread with questions on, in the middle of the magazine.
The month is usually published on the front of the magazine along with the web address and price.

Lots of colour is used in this magazine to grab the reader’s attention and to win against rival magazines sold on the high street. All of the coverlines are matching in with the titles colour scheme, which connotes that the magazine is not going to change and will appeal to the same audience all the way through, which makes the magazine easier to concentrate on.

On the front cover of each magazine is the name of the celebrity with a sentence or a phrase on what the subject of the interview is about, this makes the reader more likely to want to read the article about the celebrity.

There are lots of facts and tips on the front of this magazine that the reader may want to read about and the use of a high figure with a pound sign at the front makes the audience for this magazine excited as they think they could be in for a chance to win this amount of money.

The use of shapes with words in on the front cover is helpful as they could be more important factors.
